Speaker: Peter Calthorpe
Moderator: Dr. Ellen Dunham-Jones
About the Talk
As urban population growth across the globe continues to sprawl outwards, how do we promote healthier development patterns in diverse economies and cultures? Peter Calthorpe will present the strategies he has developed in association with the World Bank to address the three dominant types of sprawl: high-income sprawl as found in the US, low-income sprawl as found in Mexico, and high-density sprawl as found in China. A prolific author, visionary urban designer, and impactful advocate for linking sustainable growth and policy, Peter Calthorpe will deliver this year’s TSW Lecture by Zoom to an in-person audience in the Georgia Tech Architecture Lecture Series, followed by a conversation with Ellen Dunham-Jones and audience Q&A.
About Peter Calthorpe
Peter Calthorpe is one of the most impactful leaders in urban design practice and innovative thinking about sustainable communities. He is the author of six major books, a founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism, originator of the term “transit-oriented development,” creator of UrbanFootprint software that measures development patterns’ social, economic, and environmental health impacts, a successful advocate for low-carbon cities principles in China and affordable housing policies in California, and an urban designer with an extensive global practice, now as part of HDR. Recognized by ULI as a Visionary in Urban Development, he’s also served on many high-level public sector Councils and Commissions for HUD, the White House and the United Nations.
About TSW
TSW is an award-winning planning, architecture and landscape architecture practice with offices in Atlanta, Chattanooga, Lexington, and Tulsa. In celebration of over 30 years of designing livable communities TSW sponsors an annual lecture on urban design in the School of Architecture.
