Semsi Rakici is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Building Construction. She completed her Ph.D. in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at Western Michigan University in 2022. She received her M.Sc. and bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Department from Middle East Technical University (METU.)

Her research mainly focuses on the failure modeling of engineering structures. In her Ph.D. studies, she developed software to model engineering structures with brittle materials having electromechanical coupling. Now, her experience and practice concentrate on the numerical modeling of masonry structures. In addition, she is working in the team to create the structural module of NSF funded Virtual/Augmented Discipline Exploration Rotations (VADERs) Project.

Dr. Rakici is passionate about teaching critical thinking and fundamentals to students with different backgrounds. Therefore, she re-developed the Construction Mechanics Course so that the Building Construction students could have a sound understanding of statics and the strength of materials for understanding structural theory related to building components.

Areas of Expertise

  • Computational Mechanics
  • Numerical Modeling of Fracture and Fragmentation
  • Analytical solution techniques for elastic plates with higher order deformation techniques
